What is Calligraphy?
Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing formed around Arabic letters. Calligraphy means line in Arabic. The art of calligraphy emerged with a period of development that Arabic letters went through between the 6th and 10th centuries. The continuation was to develop the calligraphy in more beautiful forms, within the framework of different rules according to its place and time.
WHAT WILL WE LEARN?
Calligraphy is to practice (write) Islamic letters with a certain rule using material tools such as reed pen, soot ink, Ahar paper, Sandaloz gum, pudding and to create a spiritual work. It is to give a message to humanity with beauty by giving spirit to the letters. The subtleties of the art of writing, the history of Calligraphy, material information about ink, paper and calligraphy pens will be explained to the trainees and the rules of writing and practical calligraphy training (Rik'a writing course will be given first).
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE?
Participants will learn the history, method, spirituality and subtleties of our traditional Turkish calligraphy art. They will have the opportunity to experience the rik'a script, which is the beginning level of calligraphy. In this way, they will be able to write rik'a script, produce works and experience creating their scripts with different designs, stacks and compositions.
COURSE CONTENT
Week 1: Material information used in calligraphy, Calligraphy terminology and historical development process. Week 2: Pen holding angle and Reed pen tip opening demonstration, Inkwell preparation and Lika-Ink balance.
Week 3: Information about paper types, introduction to Rika writing, preparation of meşk
Week 4: Letters from the letter Elif to the letter ye, explanation of point size, Rika exercises
Week 5: Rika script exercises
Week 6: Rika writing exercises continued
Week 7: Methods of making sized papers used in calligraphy, Rika script exercises
Week 8: Areas of use of Rika script in the Ottoman Empire, Rika script exercises
Week 9: Types of writing in calligraphy, Thuluth, Nesih, Divani, Celi Divani, Celi Thuluth, Rikaa
Week 10: Translation in Rika text
Week 11: Preparing a work, points to consider during writing

Atalay AcresHe was born in Bingöl in 1980. He completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul and his university education at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. He started his calligraphy education with the classical method in 2001 with his teacher, Calligrapher Aydın Ergün. He practiced in Rika, Sülüs, Celi Sülüs, Divani, Celi Divani, Rika writing systems for 15 years. He is also currently taking lessons in Talik script from his teacher Mustafa Parıldar.
In order to complete his calligraphy education, he started working with painter and calligrapher Etem Çalışkan in 2002 and produced italic type productions consisting of processes that lasted 4 years. He also continues to work freely in Gothic, Çeltik and Copperplate scripts.
He also gives calligraphy lessons in various course notifications belonging to Ümraniye Municipality. In the field of calligraphy, he participates in gift, invitation, certificate writing, diploma writing, events, festivals, activities, domestic and international fairs, as well as commercial merchants, and continues his work in Istanbul.
He was entitled to receive an artist promotion card in the field of Calligraphy from the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture within the scope of intangible cultural heritage carriers in 2015, and an artist promotion card in the field of Calligraphy in 2023. He has been married for 18 years and has three children.
